Monk in a ship
Part of a wall painting (1751) from the Church of the Virgin in Delphi. that is now destroyed. The scene was most probably part of a synthesis depicting the Last Judgment. In similar depictions, from the last Byzantine centuries onwards we often find details inspired by the Book of Revelation-the phrase ""the sea gave its dead"" (Rev. 20, 13) among them- and this is what we see here also: around the ship sea monsters swim, two of them spewing human body parts.
